Liverpool fans will never forget Jurgen Klopp’s impact on their club since taking over as manager. The German's tactical genius and shrewd signings propelled the Reds to unprecedented heights, including a historic Premier League title in 2020.But he didn’t do it alone. With his eye for talent, Klopp brought in some incredible players who left an indelible mark on Liverpool's history. Today, we want to look at all the first 10 Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool signings and where are they now.
Starting with, Marko Grujic - Klopp's first signing for Liverpool back in January 2016.The Serbian central midfielder arrived at Anfield in a £5.1million deal from Red Star Belgrade, with Klopp no doubt seeing great potential in the youngster.Unfortunately, Grujic's time on the pitch for Liverpool was short-lived,playing less than 400 minutes in all competitions. But that didn't stop him from making an impact elsewhere - the midfielder spent time on loan at Cardiff,Hertha Berlin, and Porto, before eventually making a permanent move to the latter in the summer of 2021 for a transfer worth £10.5 million. A decent bit of business indeed. But all greats make mistakes, and Jurgen Klopp is no exception. There have been a few duds along the way.
Marko Grujic |
One such signing was Steven Caulker, who joined Liverpool on loan from Queens Park Rangers in January 2016.If anything encapsulated Liverpool's struggles in the early months of Klopp's reign,it was Caulker's signing. But what's even more bizarre was that Klopp decided to use the center-back as an emergency striker! As you might expect, the experiment didn't quite pan out,and Caulker failed to find the back of the net in his four appearances for the club.Nowadays,Caulker plies his trade for Wigan Athletic, a far cry from the lofty heights of Anfield. It just goes to show that even the best managers can have their off days when it comes to transfers.Likewise, Kamil Grabara - a name that may not ring too many bells for Liverpool fans. The Polish goalkeeper arrived at Anfield in 2016, amid reported interest from Manchester City and Manchester United. Having come through the youth ranks at Ruch Chorzow, Grabara was seen as a promising talent with a bright future ahead of him. However, his long wait for an appearance for the Reds was ultimately in vain, as he was sent out on loan to Danish side AGF and later to Huddersfield Town.Despite showing some promise during his time on loan, Grabara never quite managed to break into Liverpool's first team.In 2021, the young goalkeeper decided to leave Anfield for FC Copenhagen.
Loris Karius |
Another goalkeeper on the list is none other than Loris Karius.Ah, Loris Karius - a name that Liverpool fans will remember for all the wrong reasons. The German goalkeeper arrived at Anfield from Mainz 05 in 2016 with high expectations, but things didn't quite go to plan.Karius made several high-profile mistakes during his time at Liverpool, perhaps none more so than in the 2018 Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid. After that game, his confidence seemed to be shot and he struggled to regain his form.Despite being sent out on loan to Besiktas and Union Berlin, Karius never managed to recapture the kind of performances that had earned him his move to Liverpool. He was eventually released by the club in the summer of 2021 and quickly signed for Newcastle United.Karius made his debut for the Magpies in the League Cup final defeat to Manchester United, and while he didn't manage to keep a clean sheet,he certainly didn't disgrace himself at Wembley.Perhaps, the next one can be said one of the best signings by Klopp.
Sadio Mane was a driving force in Liverpool's success, scoring crucial goals and creating countless chances for his teammates. In his six years with the Reds,he managed to find the back of the net a whopping 120 times and won every trophy imaginable. But as they say, all good things must come to an end. Mane decided to leave Liverpool in the summer, heading to Bayern Munich for a new challenge. The transfer fee was no small change either - the Reds received a fixed fee of €32m with an additional €9m in add-ons.But given his recent performances for Bayern and a Champions League exit,we can say that his Bayern chapter is nowhere near his Liverpool glory days.Currently Mane is playing in Saudi Arabian Club Al-Nassr with a salary of £650 000 (R15 million) a week.
Sadio Mane |
While some of Klopp's early signings failed to make an impact,Joel Matip was a diamond in the rough. Signing the center-back on a free transfer from Schalke in 2016 proved to be a masterstroke for the Reds. Matip has been a key player for Liverpool, featuring in the heart of the defense in their title-winning campaign and helping the team win the Champions League. His contribution in the 2018-19 final, setting up Origi's goal, will forever be remembered by the club's fans.Klopp himself has heaped praise on Matip's signing, calling it one of the best pieces of business the club has done in recent years.Elsewhere, when Klopp signed Ragnar Klavan, many fans scratched their heads and wondered who he was. But the Estonian defender soon proved himself to be a dependable presence at the back, even if he wasn't exactly a world-beater.In fact, he was like the reliable family sedan of Liverpool's defense - not flashy, but always getting the job done. But when the shiny new sports car that was Virgil van Dijk pulled up, poor Ragnar was relegated to the garage. He eventually made his way to Serie A, where he spent some time. Now he has gone back to Estonian football, playing in the twilight of his career. But who knows, maybe he'll come back to Anfield someday - as a groundskeeper, perhaps?Another of Klopp’s failed performances was Alex Manninger, a 39-year-old goalkeeper who failed to make a single first-team appearance for the Reds.Despite being 39 years old at the time,Manninger joined Liverpool on a short-term deal from FC Augsburg in 2016.The former Arsenal and Juventus shot-stopper failed to make a mark and retired from professional football in 2017.
Georginio Wijnaldum |
However, Klopp made up for it with his next signing, Georginio Wijnaldum, who proved to be a crucial player in Liverpool's midfield despite doubts surrounding his £23 million move from relegated Newcastle United.Klopp defended Wijnaldum, saying he had the perfect skill set and that going under the radar was not his fault. Wijnaldum left for PSG in the summer of 2021 followed by a loan move to Roma, but his departure was overshadowed by the presence of Mohamed Salah, who has become Liverpool's greatest goalscorer of the Premier League era.Klopp's eye for talent has paid off handsomely with the acquisition of Salah, a player who has become the defining acquisition of the Klopp era, scoring over 180 goals in almost 300 appearances in all competitions. It's safe to say that Klopp's ability to spot talent and build a team around them has led to Liverpool's renaissance. That’s more than enough info.
