UEFA Europa League which is commonly known as “UEL” is a tournament that ranks below

UEFA Champions league thus making it a 2nd tier tournament.

It ranks above UEFA Europa Conference League which is a 3rd tier tournament.

This tournament is held annually just like UCL and UECL.

Here are 10 surprising and confounding facts about UEFA Europa League.


1.UEFA Europa League was formed by Union of Football Associations commonly known as UEFA in 1971.

In the beginning, it was a 3rd tier tournament from 1971 to 1999.

After the discontinuation of UEFA Cup Winners Cup, it became a 2nd tier tournament.

2.UEFA Europa league’s initial name was UEFA Cup until 2009.

The name was changed because UEFA president Michel Platini hoped that it will give the

competition more impetus and the value and the fan following of the tournament will increase.

3.At the start, the final match of UEFA Europa League was a two-leg match.

This format was changed to single leg match in 1997-98 season.

Inter Milan and Roma played the first single leg final in that season.

The final was won by Inter Milan.

4.Among all the UEFA trophies, the UEL trophy is the most heaviest weighing up to 15Kg.

Unlike other trophies, it has no handles and its height is 65cm, width 33cm and 23cm depth.

It was designed by the workshops of Bertoni in 1972 in Italy.


5.The winner cannot take the trophy home.

UEFA keeps the original trophy and awards a replica to the winner club which they can

take and display in their achievements.

6.Any club that wins the UEFA Europa League trophy 3 times or 5 times consecutively is

awarded a special recognition mark from UEFA and then the club starts the new circle from

zero again.Sevilla is the latest club to do this as they won their 5th UEL trophy.

7.Sevilla FC is the club that has won the most UEFA Europa League titles, a record 6 times.

Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and Liverpool has won 3 times.


8.Celtic’s Henrik Larsson is the top scorer in the history of Europa League.He scored 40 goals.

9.The achievement of winning most matches in the history of Europa League is held by Inter

Milan.They have won 96 matches.

10.Spanish clubs have won this competition for 13 times which is most by any country.

England and Italy both have won UEL title 9 time.
